Autumn Sunflowers Pattern

This pattern sprang from a self initiated brief reflecting on autumn and the ‘back to school’ time of year.

The autumnal colour palette is derived from the natural tones of the season, and the flora and fauna are all symbolic of learning and moving between seasons.

Fennel is historically given as a gift when someone has done well, dwarf sunflowers symbolise joy and adoration, and oak is symbolic of wisdom and longevity of knowledge. All three are also native to the U.K. during the time of year between the end of summer and autumn.

I researched these plants and their backgrounds on the RHS website and in a few old reference books I’ve collected, and would like to thank the writers and researchers behind these bodies of work for always helping me add symbolic depth to my botanical work.
